Can a person be good at high jump even though they are short?

i'm about 5' 1" and i really want to high jump. my coach doesnt think that i would be good in it but i think i will be and want to try. i just need practice. i was wondering if that because i am short i wont be able to get good at all and it will be a waste of time cause i want to compete and win but the ppl who usually do this are tall....do they have too much of an advantage?|||There are good high jumpers who are not tall, but they are limited.

I have seen some fairly short college high jumpers who were less than 6 feet tall, that could clear 7 feet in jumping.

The problem is everyone is limited to how high over their head they can jump, and most can not jump much more than 1 foot over their heads, so if you are short you are limited to your potential clearances.

Obviously a taller jumper has an advantage over a shorter jumper.|||If you really work at it. It will still give you a good benefit if you play any other sports. It will get you hops and if you grow then you will be good.
