Why do rabbits sometimes jump high in the air and thump their feet?

We let he run around in the living room and she jumps up high and makes a thuming noise when she jumps on our couch.|||Rabbits run and jump for pleasure. The jumping and twisting they do (called a binky) is purely for fun, the running around like an idiot (bunny 500) is both fun and learning. They'll scat around combining the two but if you look close you'll see sometimes they run the same patterns. Rabbits are prey animals, they rely on speed and knowledge of their surroundings to escape. It's vital for them that they know how to get to a safe spot as fast as possible. They'll run a particular route over and over to make sure they have it down pat and that there are no obstructions to slow them down.

Thumping is usually a way they warn other rabbits of danger in the area, in the domesticated animals I know, it seems to go beyond that though. Sometimes it will show annoyance or simply be for attention. If she's doing it right after running around and playing I'd be inclined to think it's more for attention than fear. You'll be able to tell from her body language ie tense, alert, flighty probably means danger, where as a thump followed by her grooming or binkying isn't.|||ITS CALLED HAPPINESS,AND THAT HE FEELS GOOD

AROUND YOU,YOU ARE GIVING THE RIGHT ATTENTION

AND CARE,FANTASTIC,WATCH WHEN YOU GRAB IT AND HE TRIES TO LICK YOU,THAT'S HOW THEY SAY I LOVE YOU,

I HAD ONE TOO,ITS A PERSIAN BUNNY, FEMALE,SHES 2 YEARS OLD,I LOVE HER TOO.|||to try to touch the skys with their feets

like all the hymains tryed to do|||Which is it? A he or she? Well anyway it is having fun pop corning %26amp; thumping is a territory thing!|||I am not sure about the jumping, but when rabbits thump, it is a call for help. Your rabbit is sad or scared and is reverting to the instinctual habit of "thumping for help". You may be neglecting your rabbit or not taking well enough care of him. I would suggest giving him more love and making sure he is happy.|||because she's happy!!|||i had a rabbit once, the vet told me it was their way of playing and it just shows they are happy with their environment|||We had a rabbit that did that. we named him thumper. its natural.|||they do it to look for danger and thump thier feet to wran other rabbits|||calling for a mate....I raise rabbits! Male rabbit or a Buck will thump his back foot when he is done with the Doe too.|||Cause she is happy. LET HER BE HAPPY!!!!

Because they want to do somersaults...they are happy doing so!!!!!!|||cause it see you comin|||I don't know but mine does that too :)|||well the running and the high jump - is just 'feeling good' just like a kid

the thump - is an alert noise

whether it is 'Danger' - or 'My Space' - you will notice she is listening after she does it. trying to see if someone is going to 'reply'. make your own soft 'thump' and see if she replies.

Bucks will thump after mating - warning the other boys away.
